They'd have to re-up him for another year after 2011 (and he'd have to pitch well) to get the draft pick.Stevenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14109288910583404941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-43003043585440554512009-12-24T22:36:25.600-05:002009-12-24T22:36:25.600-05:00Why would I be reassured by those young starters b...Why would I be reassured by those young starters being converted to bullpen arms? Why not? They all have shown the ability to make it through a major league lineup once or even twice before getting severely tagged. What is a relief pitcher anyway if not a guy who's just not quite good enough to cut it as a starter? Tyler Clippard and Jason Bergmann successfully transitioned from starter to relief. (Joel Hanrahan, not so much.) These guys are here now, they're under contract and under team control. They're at least as good as any relievers that could be picked up on the open market. An Briosca Morhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06855174362787324401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-19533964459252786022009-12-24T17:13:03.823-05:002009-12-24T17:13:03.823-05:00Steven,

So the whole Type A status for next season is moot.

Overall I love the move, especially considering we have the 2nd year of control only if he earns it/we want it (which also would give more value for a trade). He's cheaper and younger than any other closer that was on the market. And outside of Gonzalez (who cost a draft pick) or Soriano (who we would have had to trade something for), I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better closer.Steve Shouphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08995967113869172494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-55004685522089749442009-12-24T15:08:34.089-05:002009-12-24T15:08:34.089-05:00You're reassured by Balester, Mock, Chico, Sta...You're reassured by Balester, Mock, Chico, Stammen, Martis, and Martin? The first split being the bullpen that the idiot Bowden put together. The second being the revamped bullpen that we finished the season with that actually seemed to pitch pretty well.

I as well do not think we're that bad off right now. We went from depending on Tavarez, Ledezma and Shell to having Burnett, Bruney and Capps.Todd Bosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02588001750834983356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-25158074737798424072009-12-24T13:24:32.684-05:002009-12-24T13:24:32.684-05:00Look for one or more of the following to also pitc...Look for one or more of the following to also pitch significant numbers of bullpen innings next year, in addition to those pitchers you've already named: Balester, Mock, Chico, Stammen, Martis, Martin. The bullpen situation is not nearly as bleak as you paint it.An Briosca Morhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06855174362787324401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-48864873171258526762009-12-24T13:11:19.954-05:002009-12-24T13:11:19.954-05:00I like this deal too. I'm not totally familiar with how Elias makes their rankings, but I do know that things like saves are weighted heavily in determining Type A and B status. Right now Capps is just shy of Type A status.
If he gets a full season of saves with the Nats, I think he'll very likely become a Type A, which would be a great return for a year of Capps.

Also, here's a good article about what we're getting from Capps.Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01902355704452340677noreply@blogger.com
