Now you've just rested three other guys for situations with perhaps less leverage.

Other caveat: All this is predicated on a small sample size, and Shell didn't do so well at some stations in the minors. Still, I want to see more, not less, of him in tough situations.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01915120760049904431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-54989701639962459972008-08-06T18:19:00.000-04:002008-08-06T18:19:00.000-04:00Manny clearly still considers Ayala one of his mos...Manny clearly still considers Ayala one of his most reliable. I tend to want to give Ayala the benefit of the doubt given the workload he had, but it's hard to argue that right now he should be getting the high leverage situations. But let's be fair--it's not like Manny's passing over Brad Lidge and Mariano Rivera out there.

@Steve--don't forget Chief says he'll be back by spring training.Stevenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14109288910583404941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-37238024062344395262008-08-06T10:42:00.000-04:002008-08-06T10:42:00.000-04:00I agree wholeheartedly, this bullpen is horrible. ...I agree wholeheartedly, this bullpen is horrible. While i was in the forefront of the "trade Rauch" movement, i think by not adding any arms at the deadline (in a guz, or redding deal) is going to show a big weakness on this team that will have to be addressed in FA.

Outside of Rivera and Shell and MAYBE Hanrahan (still not sold on him yet but he deserves a shot next year) who do we have for our bullpen going into next season?? Maybe Carr or Zech will be ready or maybe moving Chico or Mock to the BP full time, but I'm a bit skeptical. I think we need to sign prob. 2 Type-B free agent relievers so we have at least some semblence of of bullpen.Steve Shouphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08995967113869172494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074246508221440257.post-2391804004933806292008-08-06T08:50:00.000-04:002008-08-06T08:50:00.000-04:00So after 7, the Nats are sitting on a 2-run lead. ...So after 7, the Nats are sitting on a 2-run lead. And Steven Shell, one of the most dependable and versatile relievers in the National League, is left to sit on his ass in the bullpen, even though he was off the night before.

Was there something the matter with him, or are we just afraid to try to win?

Let Ayala and Manning pitch garbage time. God knows there'll be plenty of that between now and the end of the season.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
