Are We Going to Get an Announcment on Zimmerman tonight?

Ryan Zimmerman has set 4 pm today as the deadline for getting a long-term deal done. Probably it means there will be no deal. But the little fan inside me with the red-colored glasses is thinking maybe just maybe Stan's working feverishly to get the deal done. C'mon Stan--you know it's the right thing to do, even if it means giving an agent what he's asking for just once.

So what's reasonable? Six and 60? Five and 45? Four and 37?

I'd go 6 and 60. But I'm crazy.

Mike, you're crazy.

I'd be fine with 6 and 60...guess I'm crazy too!

According to reports, Zimmerman is putting all discussions off until the end of the season. A good decision, but if the Nationals are serious about signing him long term, they are certainly not showing it.

It's not really a question of what's reasonable. It's a question of what's enough for Ryan to decide he'd rather take the security of a big payday now over an even bigger payday 2 years from now. I don't think it would take 6 and 60, but if he hits his 50th percentile projection for the next 2 years, chances are he'll get significantly more than that come 2012. If Ryan thinks he can do even better than that and wants to take a chance, then it would be his prerogative to make that bet. Then the team would have to decide they were willing to let the face of the franchise walk 2 years from now (when they'll still be bad and season tickets will be even more lagging) over however million dollars.

For me, I think the Nationals have to get this done. And the longer they wait, the more expensive he becomes.
