Charlie Needs a Day-cation

It's bad enough Charlie Slowes has to watch the Scats every night from a booth about 10,000 feet above sea level. Tonight he mistakenly called the game-ending flyball out as a home run, and then as the broadcast cut to commercial he could be heard very clearly saying "shit" into the live mic.

They had a new board op on the broadcast after firing Steve Ray and the new guy didn't clip the mikes.

Steve Ray was fired? What's that about?

For those with Gameday Audio, it's at the 3:25:15 point of the archived broadcast. Fast forward to 3:25:00 and let it run

I just got an email from the station asking me to take down the post, explaining that no one knew that it had gone out on the air until I posted it and that I'm damaging Charlie's career.

It's true since you don't care about anybody's reputation. All you ever do on this blog is rip people apart without thinking about the ramifications of how that affects anyone personally. You have no accountability and you never will. Maybe someday someone will damage you for an honest mistake and you loose out on your life's work. You provide nothing to advance the cause yet take pride in making individuals feel bad. What a great guy you must be.

Don’t do it, Steven. Tell the station it's called the 1st Amendment! In reality, no one will hold it against Charlie, who is probably the only decent thing associated with the Nats. I use language far worse when watching the Nats.

Geez. I wonder if ESPN gets calls like this from Majestic Athletic every time they run a blooper reel.

Gotta love it when anonymous posters attack me for "hiding."

My name is Steven Biel, and I live on capitol hill, and with 2 second on google I'm sure you can find my phone number.

El Rey--exactly. I didn't even blame charlie in my post. I thought it was funny. Profanities slip out on the air constantly on sports broadcasts. Do these guys never watch football?

Anyone who makes the kind of salaries that people involved in MLB make shouldn't be losing any sleep about their 'reputation.'
They are public figures and therefore open to criticism, mockery, or just simply being called what they sometimes are: fucking idiots.

Craig said...

They're trying to censor you? And when does saying "Shit" end someone's career?

They should take the publicity gladly.

The anonymous commenter sounds like it might be Phil Wood, given the obvious venom & disdain for bloggers who render opinions on the team (even though you in no way rendered an opinion on this matter).

"no one knew that it had gone out on the air until I posted it"

Are there really that few people listening to the game?

Just let Charlie know Shit Happens and move on.

Is there any video of this? Following the Nationals has reached such an absurd level, it does not surprise me that MASN suits are bitching about a blog post. They should focus on less on blog post and actually improve their TV product because it seriously lacking compared to other Regional sports networks.

I love how annoymous commenters bitch about you not being accountable but they are too scared to give out their real identities.

I was at the game and did not hear what was said, however, hope you realize that you could seriously have cost someone their job and/or have them fined. It sounds like you thought it was funny, which I am sure it was to hear it live and chat with your friends about. Even through email or whatever. However, this does not seem approprite to blog about when it was a mistake. It might have even been an equipment thing or something when they thought that they were off the air.

Like I said, I didn't hear it, but am a fan of the team and the team has enough bad publicity as it is and we don't need more!

I like the radio guys and would hate for anything to happen to them.

To give you an idea - you can look at the FCC Rules. "The base monetary sanction for violation of the FCC's indecency, profanity, and/or obscenity restrictions is $7,000 per violation. The FCC may adjust this monetary sanction upwards, up to a current statutory maximum of $32,500 per violation, based on such factors as the nature, circumstances, extent and gravity of the violation, and, with respect to the violator, the degree of culpability, any history of prior offenses, ability to pay, and such other matters as justice may require."

@Rob B - Radio station staff makes next to nothing and if you haven't noticed lately, there are not a lot of jobs being handed out anywhere in the country.

@El Ray - The FCC has rules that are not protected by the First Amendment.

@Steven-Would you consider removing this post? For the love of the team, please?

FCC rules also do not apply to accidental utterances and also profane language is ok in the safe harbor hours of 10 pm to 6 am.

WFED has no problems.

Bloggers, to be clear, can say any goddamn fucking thing we motherfucking please anytime we want, whether it's profane, obscene, or indecent. So fuck y'all, FCC.

I'm surprised the radio broadcasts aren't on a delay to prevent stuff like this from going out over the air. After all, they do have mics to pic up crowd noise, and sometimes there will be a loud person near the mic and every word he yells (for some reason it's never a she) goes right out over the air. The possibility for even worse than what Charlie said getting out there is large.

Or are they on a delay, and did their board op just miss it? Maybe that's why Steve Ray was fired (if indeed he was).

Who gives a fuck? Only an uptight asshole with shit for brains would care about one little curse word slipping out at the end of a crap-ass ballgame by a useless bunch of poopie heads.

I'm reminded of that line at the end of Dustin Pedroia's commercial.

Apart from you? (After all, you're the one who brought it up in the first place, like it had any relevance at all to anything, right?)

I'm being ironic, John. Lighten up, ok?

A guy with a couple of mouths to feed making a radio board op salary at a time when radio companies are dropping people like flies. I would be the uptight asshole who cares that it was heard on my watch. I don't have an account that's why I'm anonymous. I don't do these blogs. Someone else sent me the link. And I certainly wouldn't come back to one run by a person with less than no class. Enjoy your miserable, feeble life trying to fool people into thinking you're doing something useful at Greenpiece. The word used on the air definitely describes you.

A+++++++++ BLOG POST AND COMMENTS, WOULD READ AGAIN!

Shorter Steven: we like Charlie, and as Nats fans, sympathize with his inadvertent obscenity. Better to laugh than cry, right?

Shorter commenters: Steven is a very bad man and the internet is very bad and Greenpeace is full of dirty fucking hippies.

@ Nat Fan/Anonymous-
This blog could cost someone their job?
That's funny. I thought you usually lost your job by not doing it CORRECTLY in the first fucking place.
And please don't bring the economy into this, it's a fucking BASEBALL blog.

@An Briosca Mor: You can't put a baseball game on delay. The guys sitting in the stands with the radios (like me) can't watch with a delay. Believe me, I tried it--took the XM portable once and there's about a 12-second delay on the satellite. Getting the call for pitch one during the windup for pitch two drove me freakin' nuts.

An Briosca Mor said...

@Victor: They put the TV broadcast on delay. As you point out, they put the XM broadcast on delay. MLB Gameday audio feed is on delay. No reason they couldn't put the radio broadcast on delay if they felt they needed to.

As it is, I can't watch the MASN feed and listen to Charlie and Dave because the TV is on delay and the radio isn't.
