Cross the Giants off the List

The Giants just sent #9 prospect, pitcher Scott Barnes and a PTBNL to Cleveland for Ryan Garko.

Garko's a bit younger and cheaper than Willingham or Johnson, but at 28 he's not as young as you might think. And he's an inferior player to either of our guys.

This is the kind of deal the Nationals need to be making. If they can do better, great. But if the music stops, and we're still stuck with 4 starters for 3 spots and Johnson set to walk at the end of the year, then it's a big failure for Rizzo.

What four starters for three spots? Dunn LF, Morgan CF, Willingham RF, Johnson 1B. Get rid of Dukes. If anyone comes looking for Willingham or Dunn, subtract one prospect from what they're offering and trade them Dukes instead.

I agree Steven about Johnson but doesn't the potential exist for him to be a type B free agent?

I don't get the rush to trade Josh. He is under club control thru 2011 at a reasonable price, plays the game the right way, and can theoretically play several positions.

My guess is that he won't be a type B, but the system is confidential so it's impossible to know conclusively.

Agreed. Not to mention the fact that he is the Nats' best hitter and has been so for the last month and change. It isn't even close. Zimmerman and he should swap places in the order ASAP.

What's more, his is likely not a fluke: Baseball Prospectus 2009 pointed out that between 2006 and 2008 his road averages were something like .290/.390/.500. IOW, get him away from Miami and he is a very good hitter.

Steven can someone explain the difference between a type A and type B free agent? I don't quite get it, although I know draft picks are received when the said free agent departs.

Love the podcasts and thanks.
