When was the last time you've seen so many top prospects change hands in such a short time? And here we are, sitting on a boat load of 30-year-olds with nothing to show.
The kicker came tonight: the Pirates just acquired top pitching prospect Tim Alderson for Freddy Sanchez. Freddy Sanchez. Really? We couldn't offer better than that?
Rizzo better have a huge coup up his sleeve, because if the trading deadline comes and we don't get in on any of this action, it's an epic fail.
Wouldn't it be more fun to write this post?

To be fair Steven we don't know what is going on behind the scenes. The Nats offered Johnson for Sanchez as a foundation for a trade but they backed off. On face value alone the Giants should have taken it and ran so I suspect the Nats asked for a pitching prospect to go along with the trade and they said no. Really stupid imo. The Rockies asked for Joe Beimel and we wanted top 2B prospect Eric Young Jr. I am sure that there are more offers but based off what I am seeing, it seems like teams undervalue Nationals player, which is understandable for obvious reasons. When you suck as a team, everyone sucks.
Sabean massively overpaid for Sanchez. It's a shame we couldn't pawn Guzman or Johnson off on him. Unfortunately, players like Johnson, Willingham and even Guzman are more valuable as everyday players on a bad team than they would be role players on a contender, so it's tough to get "fair value" on the Nats end.
Nate--I appreciate your loyalty, but I think you're making excuses. Looking at the Holliday deal, Betancourt, Wilson, Sanchez... we're in an extreme seller's market right now. I've never seen so many top prospects get moved. And the really strange thing is that all the contenders are looking for BATS not arms.
If we can't get anything done in this market, it's a failure, no excuses.
